When Josh broke up with Anna, she immediately grabbed the vase and launched it at him.
Josh lowered his gaze, unable to look at her any longer. He could not bear to watch her wide eyes fill with tears. His voice wobbled, “I’m so sorry Anna. I just can’t do this any more. We’re over.” Out of the corner of his eyes, Josh could see Anna raise her hands, and assumed she was covering her mouth like she always did when she was caught off guard. He finally built up the courage to look at her. To his surprise, Anna’s hand were not covering her mouth, but were wrapped around the glass vase that sat on the counter. Her brows furrowed deeply and her lips scowled. In one swift motion, Anna snatched up the vase and launched it at Josh.
It was 5:30 on a Friday afternoon and Anna was preparing dinner for Josh. The two had been together for three years, but they had only been living together for about nine months now. When making the decision to live with each other, they decided to buy a brand new apartment. They found a perfect little place in Boston. It was in the middle of where both of them worked and was not too far from either of their families.
At first, living together felt perfect. Josh and Anna created a routine for themselves. They would take turns making breakfast for each other each morning. Not anything too extravagant; something as simple as toast with peanut butter sufficed. After after eating breakfast at their round kitchen table and sharing the dreams they had the previous night, they would begin getting ready for work. Anna would put on her nurse’s scrubs and then help Josh tie his tie. They would then walk down to the front of their building together, kiss, then go their separate ways.
The past two months had been different; Anna and Josh started fighting. One morning, for the first time since they had moved in together, Josh did not get up to make them breakfast. They had been fighting the whole previous night, so when he woke up, Josh was immediately flooded with anger and did not want to make breakfast. When Anna came down stairs, she saw the barren kitchen table. A lump formed in her throat. She tried swallowing it but she looked over and saw Josh. He was looking in the mirror hanging next to the door trying to tie his tie himself.
Tonight, Anna decided she wanted to fix things. She desperately wanted to go back to the first few months that Josh and her had first moved in together. To do so, she left work early to prepare Josh his favorite dinner, chicken parmesan over a plate of angel hair pasta. While cooking the food, she hummed to herself, excited to restart with Josh.
Josh walked home from work today. While he was sitting in his office chair this morning, he realized he needed to leave Anna. The constant fighting put additional stress on him. He was already overwhelmed with work and being with her was no longer an escape from stress. Josh did not know how to end a relationship that took three years in the making, resulting in his decision to walk home and try to figure out what he would say.
Before entering his apartment, he froze for a moment. Josh took a deep breath and swung open the door. Immediately he was overwhelmed by the smell of pasta sauce and melting cheese. He sighed. This wasn’t the first time Anna had tried fixing things. Her solution was always to make him one of his favorite meals and try to go back to how they were. But Josh knew that in order to make progress with their issues, they needed to move on, not go back. Anna did not get that, so he knew what he had to do.
“Honey! You’re home a little late. That’s okay though. I made-”
“Anna we need to talk,” Josh said, interrupting her. He knew he needed to keep this short and sweet.
“What about dear?” Anna asked, her eyes darting around the stove top.
“You know what about. We’ve been fighting, constantly, for the last couple of months. It’s driving me crazy.”
“I know! We just need to go back to how-”
“No,” Josh’s voice was stern, “We can’t keep going back and pretending that this isn’t working. Anna this isn’t working.” Anna went silent.

His words echoed in her head. Josh just broke up with her. She felt all the blood pulsing in her veins flood to her cheeks. They had been together for three years. All that time was wasted, down the drain, gone. Her world was spinning, small black speckles encroached on the side of her vision. Anna blinked her eyes hard; she was surprised to find no tears. Her eyes scanned Josh. Anna’s jaw clenched when she saw he was looking at the floor. He couldn’t even look at her. Pathetic, Anna thought as she sucked in a deep breath, her lungs reluctantly breathing in the poisoned air. Her hands began moving. They wrapped around the cold, glass vase that sat on the counter. It was smooth under her fingers. Anna’s hands lifted the heavy vase above her head. Her arms shook from the weight of it. When she saw that his eyes still focused on the wooden floorboards, a new wave of wrath overcame her. The vase soared across the room, heading towards him. Anna watched as the vase soared through the air, crossing the space between the two, and just barely missing Josh’s head.
